You’d better hope tumblr isn’t dying (tumblr users do like to be hysterical after all) because if this site goes out from under me I’ve half a mind to just call it a good run and pay more attention to my day job, because there’s just… no suitable rehost for my comics
Careful there captain, you dont want micheal bay seeing your willy nilly posting schedule and remaster it into a movie with an unnecessary amount of explosives
Everyone going shopping on Black Friday, be aware of three things:
The retail workers are working 12 hours shifts. We are threatened with losing our jobs if we don’t show up unless we’re dying in the hospital. I had an assistant manager show up with fucking strep because he would’ve been fired otherwise. Yes, he did infect 7 and hospitalize 2 coworkers; who knows how many members of the public he infected.
The stores have, maybe, 5 of that special cheap thing you’re after. Corporate does this on purpose, and stores are not allowed to order enough. The prices aren’t even that much lower. They lie about how expensive something is to fool you into thinking you’re getting a discount. You aren’t.
Most of the workers you will come across will be new hires for the sole purpose of being bodies for about three months before they’re fired. They actually don’t know anything because they’ve been working there for maybe two weeks, and have had no real training. I was once hired at Staples a week before Black Friday and expected to know how to deal with phones, coupons, the online ordering site, and AS400 after five 6-hour shifts. This is the kind of person you will likely be dealing with at Black Friday.
Do me and my retail family a favor and don’t shop Black Friday. Any company that needs a sale day like Black Friday to get their sales out of the red doesn’t deserve to be in business.
This also goes for anyone that works shipment too. We’re suddenly expected to stay as late as they want you to even if they know you don’t have a car and rely on a ride to get you to and from work and know you can’t stay late. Shipment workers will suddenly start getting berated for not getting things done and it is by far the most stressful time to be a shipment worker for any store. Especially when they throw in new hires that don’t know how to process things and are expected to work at the same pace as the people that have worked there for a while.
Retail is shit around the holidays, especially Black Friday
ok fellow millenials, it’s time to kill black friday
LET’S KILL BLACK FRIDAY
As someone who has to work - can confirm. I also think I’m getting sick? Which is hilarious, because I basically have to power through it because of the potential fallout if I don’t show
Free Graphic Novels (DC, Marvel, Image, etc), Music, TV shows, and music on HOOPLA.
Free music that you can KEEP on FREEGAL
You are PAYING for all this with your tax money - USE THEM. Most likely systems will have all 3 or 2 out of 3, so if you aren’t sure call your local library’s reference/information desk and how you can get set-up or started.
Hey, highkey from a library worker:
Overdrive has a new mobile app called LIBBY I find it easier to use. It’s the same content as Overdrive just better for mobile. Overdrive and Libby both let you send items to your kindle as well.

A NYC grad student working on food stamps for her thesis has released a free cookbook for those living on $4/day.
SIG NAL BOO OO OO OOOST
hello
oooooh this is so nice!
I believe it’s important to eat well, even when you’re strapped for cash. It’s good for your health and energy! This cookbook is full of delicious and healthy recipes, the ingredients of which are fairly inexpensive.
I ACKNOWLEDGE THIS WOMAN AS A FELLOW WARRIOR AND A FANTASTIC HUMAN BEING.
Boost so hard. Feeding yourself well is a challenge when you”ve got little income
I HAVE BEEN USING THIS COOKBOOK FOR MONTHS AND IT’S AMAZING 100/10 RECOMMENDING EVERYWHERE
(just to give you an idea, my food budget is 30 euro/week at most [about $38] and I have to maintain a healthy diet due to weird medication side-effects and yeah, basically this book is a lifesaver if you’re broke but need to watch what you’re eating)
Reblog to save a life. Because it’s easy to find food for $4/day, but most of it tends to be garden variety junkfood
one of the oldest and arguably the most important museum in Brazil is burning to the ground as we speak. home to the portuguese royal family from 1808 to 1821, the Museu Nacional stored fossils, meteorites, pre-historic human skeletons and a variety of artefacts related to natural history. it holds two centuries of latin & brazilian history and now it’s all gone.
some of the things that are now lost forever: the largest collection of egyptian artefacts in latin america; the skeleton of the largest flying reptile ever found in Brazil; the oldest human fossil ever found in the country, named “Luzia” (over 11.000 y.o) and other 20 million extremely important relics and researches just burned to the ground. never to be seen again.
thanks to our government, of course, who didn’t want to pay the museum the necessary funds to make the essencial maintenances since 2014 (which by the way, costed less than a supreme federal court judge’s sallary: R$520 in a year).
another sad instance where the state’s indifference towards culture and history becomes painfully obvious. this is a massive blow to our cultural legacy.
all that in our independe week. happy independe for us, brazilians, who just lost our history and culture in a fire caused by ignorance and indifference.
in case you’re wondering, this is what the museum used to look like:
this is what it looks like now:
thousands of years of culture lost. happy independence week.
“Authorities say the fire lasted for six hours, causing irreparable damage. To put it bluntly: it’s all gone. A meteorite, that can sustain incredibly high temperatures, was found intact. But other than that, there are apparently no other pieces left. It would not be an understatement to call the Museu Nacional the Brazilian equivalent of the Louvre or the British Museum.”
here is some of the international news saying on this, because most articles and videos are all in portuguese, u can check some of the news in english: (here *new york times*) (here *bbc news*) (here *le monde* for french speaking readers) (here *shorouk news* for people who speak arabian) (here *azteca news* for spanish) (here *corriere della sera* for italian).
it was a natural science and historic museum, there were all sorts of important researches and relics. all burned. this was our culture. our history. the first human fossil found in brazil (mentioned above, Luzia) was so important for science, since it proved that way before indigenous tribes existed in Brazil, there were black people.
this is the place where our first constitution was made and the declaration of independence was signed. our independe day is this friday. heartbroken.
hey uh just an anon here i just recently stumbled across your old as shit hellacraft texture pack, was wondering would it be okay if i . if i uh used some of the old shit to make an updated version for the most recent version of minecraft? i figured itd be polite to ask before actually making and releasing any shit lmao. sorry for this lengthy and weird ask
go for it good citizen, I sure as shit don’t have the time to update Hellacraft from version what was it, 1.8? There’s probably all kinds of mad shit they’ve added since then. I had pursued a policy of not updating it because the missing textures only made everything shittier and as a result made it even better but it probably just broke completely at some point.
whatever you do just make sure the pack results in an experience that’s only just barely playable
technology related sensory memories from my childhood
sliding the metal cover on floppy disks
the slight resistance of inserting cassette and video tapes
ripping off the strips of holed paper off of dot matrix printer paper
rolling the wheel on a disposable camera to take another photo
The heaviness and rubber texture of the roller ball in a computer mouse, and the little ring of lint
Unkinking the curly cord of a telephone while you talked
The -peww sound and slowly fading image of a crt monitor turning off, and then running your finger through the static on the dusty glass
The crunch of opening or closing a plastic Disney vhs cover
The sound effects in kidpix
Extending and collapsing metal antennas and using them as magic wands
…God, it is so weird these things aren’t around any more. Cause it’s true, the sensations are so distinct. It’s bizarre to think about missing these tiny relics.
the average notes for this blog is like 5 so you guys had some opinions lemme see what’s in here
i appreciate the plug but the truth is that i’m actually garbage and so are my shirts (also spreadshirt have featured some people i’m not happy with so I’m considering switching to a new shop when I can be arsed)
The Supreme Court just issues a ruling allowing Ohio and other states to purge voters from their election registration rolls due to their failure to cast a ballot in previous elections.
This is a major victory for the Trump administration and the GOP, and a direct consequence of the Supreme Court being stacked with more conservative judges (the votes were 5-4). This is also a huge part of what Trump/the GOP were counting on to save them in the 2018 midterm elections, which is where Democrats have been hoping to take back a majority in the House, giving them more power to combat Trump’s abuses of power and Republican legislation.
What this means is YOU CAN NOT ASSUME THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED for the 2018 elections, just because you SHOULD be. Thanks to this decision, red states can purge voters’ registration based on their not having cast a ballot in even just previous federal elections, NOT just the national Presidential elections. Effectively, if you haven’t voted in previous senate races or for congressional representatives in the past few years, that’s all they need now to say you’re no longer registered and need to register again.
They’re deliberately counting on people assuming they’re still registered and so not checking until after registration deadlines have passed, or showing up to vote this November and only then finding out they’re no longer registered, when its too late to do a damn thing about it.
And this is absolutely targeted at marginalized communities, low income voters, disabled voters, and basically anyone who simply can’t always AFFORD to keep on top of every federal election and show up to vote in every senate race, etc. Which not so coincidentally happen to be all the communities and voters who have the most to gain from Democratic victories in the 2018 midterms and are the least likely to cast votes for GOP candidates at this point.
This was absolutely a calculated effort aimed specifically at keeping the GOP in power with a majority control of the government come November, and unfortunately, it has a DAMN good chance of accomplishing just that if it goes by unacknowledged. I’m not looking to alarm or panic anyone, simply to say:
If you are a registered voter in a red state at this point, please please please do not take your registered status as assumed. Check on your registration status, look up all relevant voter registration deadlines for your state and district, CIRCLE THAT SHIT ON YOUR CALENDAR, and check your registration status AGAIN right before those deadlines pass, so you can be sure of it before its too late to do anything about it til the next voting cycle.
use vote.org to check your registration status. use the form, or scroll down to find the resources for the state you live in.
SIGNAL BOOST FOR USA EXPAT VOTERS, like me, who often miss midterm elections
If the U.S. government is going to make us file U.S. taxes while overseas let’s keep voting
someone: haha you just want to know when you’re off the hook
me: hah
me: (actually i just need to allocate the right expectations and backlog of energy and make sure the rest of my day falls in good accordance with it so that i don’t feel time-crunched and propel myself into a hysteria because if i don’t know how long this thing lasts or when it ends i can’t possibly know when literally anything else starts and my entire life becomes an unraveled realm of anarchy with no rhyme or reason and how is that not terrifying to you)
me: hey how long will this take
someone: oh like twenty minutes
me: ok
*an hour later*
me: *clinging to every learned social skill i can think of with the desperate hope my distress and exhaustion doesn’t show*
someone: hey we’re almost done don’t be so crabby
me: *smiling* *internally screaming at this SENSELESS CHAOS*
someone: hey do you want to do [involving time-consuming thing]
me: hey that sounds fun! when were you thinking?
someone: oh we’re doing it right now
me: oh. like. now-now? like right now. like you want me to stop what i’m doing and get up and do this thing with you, suddenly, with thirty seconds of warning. now. like this second. immediately. now?
Do you know Steady as another option next to Patreon to earn a stable income? -> We offer- payments being made in Euro, without risk of exchange rate fluctuation- payments via SEPA debit card (which is the most accepted payment method in Europe)- fully in line with European tax issues (boring, but true)- Europe-based support for our publishers (yes, you can call us!). All this leaving you with more income at the end of the day.
Being directly messaged by a platform is a little unorthodox, but sure I’ll bite on this question - I had looked into Steady when I was looking at Patreon alternatives back in December, but it didn’t grab me right away. As much as I’d like a European-based platform (assuming we’re not in for the Article 13 apocalypse), my audience is about 50-50 split between North America and Europe, so that part was.
I’ve also actually benefited from being paid in dollars over the last few years - I know this isn’t something I can count on, but early 2015 was a really good time to be earning dollars and spending euros. Tax has never been an issue for me since I’ve never earned enough from Patreon to hit the tax threshold for my country, and because of the W8-BEN the Patreon has never withheld any of my money for tax purposes (unlike Spreadshirt, which has more than once forgotten I’ve signed a W8-BEN). All this however could change if doing business in America suddenly becomes a lot more difficult, which, y’know, isn’t off the table this weather.
I think the kicker for me when it came to Steady was that because the bulk of my work (for now) is fan content I’m not quite sure what I’m allowed post under German copyright law? Whereas I’m quite familiar with what’s allowed under American copyright law, which is also what most of the other platforms I use operate under. It’s a question mark for me that I’m not equipped to deal with at the minute.
All that said, the option of Steady being there as a Europe-based competitor is good, and it is one of my contingency plans. And also bonus points for reaching out to me directly! It’s a little weird and I can’t verify that an anonymous user is a representative of Steady, but it’s still kinda nice, so thanks.
The Wipeout logo was designed by The Designers Republic in 1995, a landmark icon in Y2K graphic design. Upon looking at the design closely, one can notice these letters are actually made from partial 8 glyphs. Below are the overlays of the Wipeout logo with Eurostile’s 8 glyph.
Why the repeating 8s? In an LCD screen, all numerals in a 7-segment display are created with the 8 numeral.
Why the ‘ and “ marks? They denotate the minutes and seconds used in racing and implies speed.
And finally, why is the typography set in Eurostile? Eurostile, and its look-a-like Microgramma, has been established in the sci-fi canon since the late 60s as a symbol of futurism, as seen in user interfaces, signage, and in interiors. This makes it a perfect fit for the futuristic world of Wipeout.
I contacted Ian Anderson, the lead designer of tDR, and he confirmed my observations.
Successful design is always intentional. Every decision here made in the Wipeout logo has a logical connection back to racing, and within the in-game universe of Wipeout. This teaches us a lesson to always make sure your design decisions hold weight.
military worship in this country is out of fucking control
excuse me?
military worship in this country is out of fucking control
Yea you’re right, we shouldn’t honor the people willing to risk their life to save ours and defend our country … oh
Military worship in this country is out of fucking control
I’m in the military and yes it’s out of fucking control. Most of the people I know in the military feel the same way. You civilians need to calm the fuck down. Most of us joined in our teens or early twenties. For a lot of us it was because we needed a job, and we didn’t see any other options, and this job has good benefits, especially for an uneducated young person in America. We get healthcare and education!! That’s some tempting fucking fruit. But this is a JOB. Some people in the military become heroes, that’s true. Jumping on grenades, defusing bombs, dragging a wounded person from the middle of a firefight. They usually end up dead in the process. Those people deserve respect, in my opinion. They give their lives for their friends, no matter whether or not you agree with the policies that put them there in the first place. But a lot of people in America reflexively claim that everyone in the military is a hero, full stop. This isn’t true and it lets people look the other way when something is actually wrong in the military, because it’s the military, they’re heroes, they can do no wrong.
We’re doing a job, and a lot of us are never really put in harm’s way. I work in a climate controlled lab for 8 hours a day, for instance. Really grueling. Such a hero. This fawning lip service of an infallible military doesn’t do us any good. I know people who have bought into it, who have heard so many people tell them that they’re heroes that they actually believe it, and they are the stupid and dangerous ones. Joining the military does not make you a hero, and calling us heroes might make you feel all warm and fluffy and red white and blue but it doesn’t do anything for the people that end up on the streets with PTSD or come home with life-changing injuries or in a box. We’re human beings, not some concept that you can just mindlessly adulate and then feel better about yourself.
☝️🏽☝️🏽☝️🏽☝️🏽
oh boy just in time for the 4th of July
Speaking as a disabled veteran: it’d be one thing if the fucking hero worship MEANT ANYTHING. But it’s a bunch of empty loud words about how Brave and Noble everyone in the military is (nah some of us are assholes) and then when it comes to, oh I don’t know, paying a soldier enough to feed their family without food stamps, or giving disability compensation without a NIGHTMARE fight with the country that claims to “care” so much. Plus the whole “sending us off to kill other people to make rich men richer while innocents die for it” thing. It’s not “defending freedom” to shove our troops into everyone’s business in countries that happen to have oil and such
Military worship isn’t only annoying, it’s a hollow lie that’s basically dangerous to everyone
Couldn’t have said any of this better myself, especially as a disabled veteran. Didn’t know a single enlisted soldier, myself included, who didn’t enlist to escape poverty or abuse whilyall the officers came from wealth (you need a college degree to become an officer). Healthcare, a bed, a meager paycheck, and a college scholarship in exchange for 4 years of my life? That is indeed some tempting fruit when you’re 18 and your life is a dumpster fire.
A great deal of us were indifferent towards the wars and even more were against them after we deployed and saw the bullshit that you’ll never see on the news or in history books.
Both the left and the right claim to care about the military when and only when it can be used as leverage to advance an agenda or fit a narrative. Fuck the right for using my plight as if it were their own and fuck the left for being mind numbingly ignorant and elitist.
Like people above me said, there are most definitely heroes in the military who shove Afghan children into alleys so they don’t get hit Taliban machine gun fire, but there are also some real black hearted shit heads among the ranks who had nothing going for them and let the hero worship go to their heads. Regardless, we were all pawns.
oh boy it’s early june, time for endless memes and hot takes surrounding games i’m generally not interested in and certainly not paying for
i’m starting to think that I’m just not the target market for much of the games industry, and neither are most of the people getting the angriest about it. like how much video games do you actually play and which ones
I’m… getting there! I got a few thousand words through the new chapter and then hit a busy life patch (other time-bounded projects like the D&C print, the postcards, a couple of other things, moving house) and it’s fallen down the list for a bit. I will get back to it though!
Tumblr’s at it again, thanks to the new European Privacy Laws. There’s probably nobody who will read this, but it pissed me off so much that I decided to make a post about it. (Ignore the weird language mish-mash, depending on your country the language might differ.)
OK, so many of us get this screen when we try to access our dash:
Realise how the ‘OK’ button is a nice, attention-grabbing blue? If you’re like me, you’re not exactly into reading a 100 pages document and tend to just click it.
My tip? DONT. Instead click on ‘Manage Options’ right next to it:
Now you’ll see this page:
Still pretty harmless, right? That ‘Accept’ button is looking really attractive right now. Instead, click on Verwalten (Probably something like ‘Manage Options’ or something in english) and you’ll get to this page:
Now that’s not too bad, right? I just switched all the buttons to ‘off’, because I’m jealously guarding my personal information and don’t want Tumblr to go off and do who knows what with it. Looks like we’re done! But wait: There’s a SHOW option.
When we click on that one, what we will get is this:
A HUGE list with OVER 300 ENTRIES of companies that can use your data by default if you’d just clicked ‘OK’ on that very first page. Coincidence that this list is hidden that much? Me thinks not. They’re all switched on by default, but I am still a petty bitch that doesn’t want to give out her data, so I switched them all off. All 300+ of them. There is no option to switch them all off at once, and even if you disable all the options above, the companies are still switched on.
(If you wonder how i got that number, I copied the list into excel and looked at the cell number. No way am I actually counting all those entries)
I too, am a petty bitch who unticked every single one.
I did this like 90 times today
there’s 325 of them I counted like the petty bitch I am
If you already clicked on Okay and want to manage this page then:
Go to Settings -> Privacy -> switch off Cookie Consent, it will automatically redirects you to the new Terms of Services page, and follow the steps above OP just described.
Hate to break it to you, folks. But doing this once won’t do the trick. I already did it twice but tumblr keeps erasing my choice which means I have to do it all over again.
this is the bonfire post. Everything before and after this strays from the bonfire. Stay awhile for a place of respite, and reblog to become a firekeeper
So…I hate to make such a personal post, but here’s the deal –
My name’s Hannah. I’m autistic, 23, trans as fuck, and a BPD sufferer, and I’m trying to escape my house where I live with my mom and her abusive husband. While I love mom a lot, she’s only able to do so much and she’s coping within her means to keep herself safe, and unfortunately, sometimes that comes at the cost of my comfort, and I can’t keep dealing with that.
So, as it stands, I’m trying to move out to Oregon. Right now I have the cost of transport taken care of, but I need money to get a place to stay, a home, medicine, all that fun stuff, and there’s only so much 16 hours a week at $8.30 is going to do for me when that money goes to food.
I’ve got my plans handy for a job, for getting assistance, getting all the good stuff figured out once I hit Oregon, I’ve got plenty of resources to look into – but until I have a secure place to stay and a good safety net to work on, I can’t just up and leave.
So, I’m here to ask for your help – anything helps. Even a share. Please – help me get somewhere where I can be safe, and happy, and start living my life.
Thank you for your time in reading my post here – and thank you doubly if you decide to donate or share this post.
Hey y'all, sorry to spam you with this one, but I wanted to let everyone know we’re at $390!! That’s just shy of 4/5ths of my initial goal – though I wanted to let everyone know my current goal has been pushed up to $1,000 thanks to the incredible generosity I’ve been getting from every single one of you lovely people, both here and in my real life.
I cannot believe how incredible and how fast the outpouring of support has been from everyone and I am blessed to know that everyone is so generous – but let’s keep pushing to that new goal so that I can comfortably house myself, feed myself, and pay some utilities – I really want to make sure that I have everything in line.
As far as some updates on the actual move itself, right now I am just waiting to hear back from the Housing Authority to speak with them about housing assistance on the federal level before looking into houses specifically; though I may end up looking to properties there as well while I wait. I have already gotten a job lined up, hopefully – they are willing to set me up with an interview once I move to the area, which I am hoping is a simple “we have to” interview. If not, there’s a lot of other places in the area.
Again – thank you, everyone. So much. I’m getting closer and closer and this whole fundraiser has really made me so happy knowing I am going to get out of this house and be able to be healthy, and be safe.
